Getting to lasting ease is both an inner and an outer journey, at the same time. Despite this sounding like a lot of work, it’s actually a joyful process, and relief typically starts within the first session.

Challenges

A major source of our struggles is accumulated stress and fear. These are both natural responses to life, however when we don’t consciously process them they become frozen in our body, mind, and behaviours. We lose confidence and clarity, and our life movement becomes stifled.

Another major factor is that we get hijacked by agendas not of our own making. We get seduced by “extrinsic” motivators such as status, money, and fulfilling the expectations of our parents and others in society. We lose touch with our own true self and end up living someone else’s life.

Pathways Forward

Coaching synthesizes the best from the leading edge sciences of change, to help you regain control of your life. Through a wealth of research and experience we now know how body, mind, and behavior become cross-wired through various stressors. Fortunately, research and experience has also given us the knowledge and methods to unwind the knots and restore natural, balanced functioning.

Through engaged conversation, exploratory exercises, and follow-through in your everyday life, coaching helps people get in touch with their intrinsic self, and to live from that wellspring of genuine strength. Healthier ways of being are awakened and cultivated, and gradually our best self takes stewardship of our life.

I use a simple but powerful coaching formula:

Courageous Self-Discovery + Transformational Tools

Courageous Self-Discovery: Coaching conversations and processes help you make a journey into your very own self. You gain clarity into how you are showing up, both the ways that are working and those that aren’t. At the same time, you re-discover your natural power bank of strength and inspiration.

Transformational Tools: Coaching incorporates proven tools from the sciences of transformational change, including neuroplasticity, positive psychology, mindfulness, and others. The coaching partnership helps you apply these tools for the uniqueness of your personhood and situation. Changes are awakened and activated, and gradually become new ways of thinking, feeling and living.

My Story

Big anxiety started for me when I was still a kid, after a near drowning incident at age 6. My first experience with “self-healing” was when I would come home after school and lay on my back for an hour of deep breathing, to calm the storm in my mind.

As a teenager I self-medicated with drugs and alcohol, kept myself occupied with street fighting and crime, and ran pretty wild for about five years. Then one day I woke up and realized I was on the edge or something, something not in the least bit excellent. I knew I had to make some changes or my life was heading downhill fast.

I found a social worker, who set me up with a Freudian psychiatrist named Dr. Moore. When my social worker told me about Dr. Moore he said, “Dr. Moore is crazy, and he can help you. And help me he did.” I can honestly say Dr. Moore probably saved my life.

After a year or so of working together, other kids in high school started coming up to me saying, “Dr. Moore said I should talk with you.“ It was the strangest thing, and I knew it was illegal for my psychiatrist to be breaking confidentiality. But I didn’t mind at all. It gave me a lot of self-esteem that Dr. Moore thought of me this way, and so I did my best to share what I could with the other kids.

At age eighteen I began a 40 years and counting journey with Tibetan Buddhism, in the lineage of the renowned master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. In a formal vow ceremony he gave me the Buddhist name, “Ocean of Peace.“ Given how “not peaceful” I experienced my existence to be, his name for me was a catalyst and an ongoing contemplation, helping inspire my path forward.

Meditation was difficult but over time indeed I began to relax and just “be here now,” as the saying goes. The journey continues to this day. I definitely still experience anxiety. But it’s not perpetual–it comes and goes. It’s also softer and not overwhelming, and it usually doesn’t stay around too long.

After dropping out of University I lived at a Buddhist monastery for 2.5 years. Following that I worked as a carpenter for 8 years, and after that I trained in Structural Integration, which I practiced for 25 years. I eventually developed my own brand and taught workshops for massage and physiotherapists throughout Canada for over 10 years. At age 42 I returned to University and completed my bachelor’s degree.

Since childhood I’ve studied and partaken in a spectrum of therapeutic and healing systems and arts. Eventually I was inspired to train as a health and wellness life coach to make use of my years of experience and knowledge in overcoming chronic anxiety.

If you doubt that you can change, consider this:

How to get from A to B:

  • Understand how deliberate change works: Through decades of research, it’s well understood that there are practical principles to achieving deliberate positive change.
  • Know what you want: With a little self-reflection, everyone can find what they truly want, in each moment, and in the bigger picture.
  • Small steps over time = lasting change: Research shows that this formula is highly effective in achieving sustainable change.
  • Recalibration: It’s not about taking on “even more” things to do. Rather it’s a matter of tweaking how you use your time and energy.
  • Strengths and resources: You have lots of them, everyone does. With awareness and practice you can learn to bring these to the forefront of your life.
